10 Reasons Why I Love My Synthetic Dreadlocks

If you are like me, you have always loved the look of dreadlocks but have been too intimidated to dread your own hair or too scared to rock synthetic dreadlocks.

I have tried so many different types of hair extensions,  I-tips, wefted, tape-in hair and even clip-in extensions. While I have loved each method, I never felt that I found a style that was truly "me." Recently, I decided to take a chance and just GO FOR IT! Doc installed my first set of synthetic dreadlocks and I fell in LOVE. Joining the dreaded side is one of the best things I have ever done for myself!

Me before dreads:

To help inspire those of you who are considering joining team #SyntheticDreadlocks, I put together my top 10 reasons for LOVING my switch to synthdreads.

My top 10 reasons why Synthetic Dreadlocks rock my world!

#1- They fit my lifestyle

I love working out. Well, to be honest, I am actually addicted to the Pound workouts. My dreads not only make me look more bad ass when I rock out in the morning, they are easily pulled back to help me keep my cool while I sweat it up.

*My most recent before and after. Dreads were made by Jennifer Skinner @RockNRollFarm!

#2- Less damage to my natural hair

No heat styling means way less damage to my natural hair. Not to mention, the dreads help preserve the natural oils and moisture to my hair, preventing the roots from drying out.

#3- No color commitment

I can play with fun hair colors as much as I want without having to commit to coloring or bleaching my hair! It's so easy to swap out a few dreads in new color blends to change up your look.

#4- I get to sleep more

My synthetic dreadlocks save me lot of time getting ready in the morning, since I don't have to wash and style my hair as often. I get to spend more time sleeping or working out!

#5- I never have a bad hair day

Isn't this is everyone’s wish? To be able to simply wake up in the morning with perfect hair. With synthetic dreads and some Dollylocks dry shampoo, it's possible everyday.

I woke uplike this. (2)

#6- Accessorizing

I can decorate my dreads and it's kinda awesome. I love using the Rastafri dread cuffs, beads, jewels and thread. I get to express myself by making art that goes onto my synthetic dreads.

The artistic dreadies made by @wanderlustextensions on Instagram are one of my inspirations for hair art!

#7- They save me money!

While the initial cost of dreadlocks isn't exactly inexpensive, I have ended up saving money by using less styling products and having to color my roots less often!

#8- My hair smells amazing

This is mainly thanks to my favorite Dollylocks products:

#9- They help spark conversations

My dreads have a magical way of inspiring people and creating conversations. Since installing my synthetic dreads I find that more people approach me and want to chat- mainly about my hair, haha. Surprisingly, it's usually grandma's who ask me the most questions about my hair and tell me they wish they could do something like that.  Imagine it, cute little grandmothers with dreads. I LOVE IT.

#10- My confidence is way up

Having synthetic dreads has made me a more confident person. I find myself standing taller, dressing up more, going outside of my comfort zone and boldly trying new things. Who knew a bold hair style could help me live more boldly?

Omg!! Confidence! Yes. I just told my mom that my self confidence has improved. Immediately!!
Did you use your dollylocks shampoo mixed with water? What worked when your scalp started to itch? What make sleeping at night more comfortable?

Yes! Isn't it amazing what a little bit of hair can do? Dollylocks products are great. Mixing the shampoo and some water in a squirt bottle works great for washing. The Dollylocks Refreshing spray is amazing for the scalp. Try using a dread wrap. It will help keep things from moving around while you are sleeping.

I agree, they're great! Do you know if they are more likely to stop lice than natural hair. That is will lice not lay eggs on synthetic hair while they do on real hair?

Lice will lay eggs on anything. They don't care. BUT unlike real dreads, if this horror ever happens to you, you can just take your synth dreads out, bag them, and pop them in the freezer for 48 hours and all signs of life will be totally gone forever.

hi, how do you deal with judgement coming from people (or perception that people will judge) for your dreadlocks? I recently installed synthetic and they looks so great but also so realistic but I'm also very conscious of people's judgement

Everyone needs to think about how and why they do what they do. I love my dreads. I think it's the most beautiful and easiest to manage for me. I have always loved unique and creative hairstyles. I get many compliments on my hair, the negativity is few and far between.

My oldest dread client is a gentleman in his 70s, who used to get told they weren't professional or age appropriate. Your hair is your sacred art. Whatever makes you feel beautiful, double down on that.
