Wool…what can you do with it? Wool has taken on many forms. It has been integrated with wigs, pieces and extension sets. There are many various types of wools out there. Littlepinkfaery guides us through them...

Types of bulk wools:

1) Colinette or slub wool.

The wool is thick and thin, like small dreadlocks and is dyed in beautiful colours Wool cut at one layer can look too blunt. The strands need to be various length to give texture to the falls. The wool should always be cut at the thinnest part of the wool. They can also be mounted in layers (simply knotting one wool strand on to the base of another).

This wool isn’t cheap- but is an easy way to create these types of looks:

2) Super chunky wools.

There are many super chunky wools and varieties depend on where you live in the world. Rowan and Sirdar sell some wonderful super chunky wools. They look like pencil thin dreads in thickeness. These wools are sometimes variegated in colour or plain coloured. These can be used loose to create falls.

3) Textured wools

Eyelash wool, snowflake, ribbon wools, ‘hairy’ wools- There are so many different textured wools out there that create beautiful falls- why anyone would choose boring DK is beyond me! These wools do look good loose but look even better when twisted or braided.

4) Double Knitting yarn- ‘normal wool’

You need to do SOMETHING with it! If you twist it or braid it, thin or chunky twists and braids, it becomes something beautiful. Try knots and knitting and crochet for differing textures. Combine it with textured wools for added interest.

5) Roving wool/ wool tops

AKA unfelted fleece. This is easy to make into dreads- it takes practice to get it perfect but easy to create woolly dreads. Roving dreads can be soft and loosely felted if you are using them for falls, but felting twice is a good idea if you are going to install them as DE/ SE. There are several methods to do this (check tutorials).

The beauty of roving dreads is that they can look more like real dreads than synth hair. You can make them lumpy and irregular or smooth, hard and rounded. Natural fleece colours look a lot like hair when they are made into roving dreads. They are lightweight and snugly for winter!

Wool Wraps -

Wool dreads in your hair other than roving? Everyone knows about roving dreads- sometimes people cannot see beyond them when it comes to wool extensions. Colinette and slub wool can be used too. Even normal DK can be seen braided in at times.

Wool wraps are a common method of using wool for extensions. Wraps consist of a braided base - be it a full head of braided extensions or a braided fall - then additional wool fiber is wrapped down the length of the braid - turning the braids into dreadlock like tendrils. Threads and textured wools can be used to create stunning effects.

Wraps create less flexible dreads but they can be rich with texture and colour. You can really go to town with these, not just wrapping, but braiding and criss crossing with accent materials like fine gold and silver threads…

SED & DED-

Long twists or braids can be made up into a double ended extensions(DED) or single loop crochet tops(SED). They are easy to care for and can be used as many times over as any synth dread. I recommend that textured wools be braided, twisted or crocheted before installing. If not, the loose wool will tangle up easily.

SED and DED wools are a popular choice because they are very light to wear. You can manage extra long dreads without any real strain on your scalp and neck. They can be made super thick and chunky too, meaning you have a lot less to install!
